What is Indian Head Massage?

What is Indian Head Massage, how can it benefit me?

Did you know?

Indian Head Massage is an ancient therapeutic practice originating from India more than 1000 years ago. It originates from an Indian alternative medicine system called Ayurveda, whereby it is believed that the mind and body are connected and thereby influence one another.  It was traditionally used by mothers who practiced it on their daughters to keep their hair in great condition.  Today in India, Indian Head Massage is an integral part of family life, and many Indian babies receive daily head massages to keep them in good health.

When did it become popular in the West?

The practice was bought to England in 1973 by Narendra Mehta, a blind man who traveled to the West to study physiotherapy.  He grew up experiencing the benefits of Indian Head Massage and developed the therapy to also include massage of the head, neck, and shoulder region.

What will it do for me?

Indian Head massage is perfect for stress-related disorders but can benefit anyone due to its profoundly calming and relaxing effects.  It relaxes the whole body, provides relief from aches and pains, eases tense muscles, improves circulation, and increases oxygen to the brain which in turn improves concentration and helps with sleep issues.

What does it involve?

Clients sit comfortably in a chair and experience massage of their upper back, shoulders, upper arms, and neck.  The treatment then moves to the head where the scalp and hair follicles are massaged, stimulated, soothed, and relaxed. To finish the client receives acupressure and massage to their face aimed at relaxing facial tension and enabling lymphatic drainage
